The New Pornographers

Canadian indie rock band The New Pornographers performed in Louisville, KY recently for one of the Forecastle Festival after shows.  Although the hour was late, the crowd was still buzzing from the festival and in high spirits.  Many bands have a song that plays right before they take the stage, The New Pornographers being one of them.  As the lights dimmed, indicating the band was about to take the stage, Suicidal Tendencie's punk rock classic "Institutionalized" started playing (one of my favorites).  The band took the stage to a packed venue of cheering fans who were ready to have a good time.  With a colorful banner as a backdrop and keyboard stands that lit up, the stage set up was colorful and added to the fun vibe of the evening.  Having recently released a new album, the band performed several newer songs, but still performed some older songs, as well, creating a varied setlist of songs for the evening.  Singer Carl Newman, vocalist and violinist Simi Stone and keyboardist and vocalist Kathryn Calder were in synch with each other all night, interacting often with each other and really playing to the crowd.  On a couple of occasions, Stone and keyboardist Blaine Thurier switched instruments, with Thurier playing the harmonica and Stone playing the violin.  The multi-instrumental talents of the group led to a dynamic set!  The band put on a upbeat and energetic set for their fans, making for a really fun late night show!   Opening the show was the incredible and talented singer-songwriter Natalie Prass, looking sharp with her white jeans, white satin button up shirt and tie and gold dress boots.  With a little bit of blues and soul, a little bit of rock and a whole lot of fun, she really got the crowd energized for the evening to come!
